Over nearly three decades, the multi platinum record-breaking New Orleans icon served up a string of classic albums, influenced two generations of stars, and pioneered a sound rooted in Louisiana bounce, yet carried by worldwide rap appeal and ambition. Like all timeless stories though, his stretches back to humble beginnings in the neighborhood his music put on the map: the Magnolia Projects. As if predisposed by destiny to pick up a microphone, he heard Melle Mel’s verse on “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five, commenced spitting, and never stopped since… “That’s really when it all started,” he recalls. “I heard Melle Mel saying, ‘Don’t push me, ‘cuz I’m close to the edge’, and that was it. I was only seven-years-old, but I knew I had to rap.” After his Cash Money Records debut Solja Rags, he crafted an era-defining opus in the form of 400 Degreez. Not only did it go quadruple-platinum, but it also became “the best-selling album in Cash Money Records History.” It produced staples such as the title track, “Ha” (which JAY-Z notably remixed), and “Back That Azz Up.” The latter would be sampled by everyone from Drake to City Girls. The Ringer lauded 400 Degreez among the “20 Best Southern Rap Albums Ever” behind only UGK’s Ridin’ Dirty and OutKast’s Aquemini. Pitchfork bestowed a rare 9.4-out-of-10 rating upon the record, and Kendrick Lamar cited it as one of his “Favorite Albums” in Complex and went so far as to claim, “They had the West Coast on smash. We definitely tried to be like them.” The heat spread far and wide across the United States. Around the same time, Juvenile comprised The Hot Boys alongside Lil Wayne, B.G., and Turk. Together, they smashed charts with the Get It How U Live! [1997] and the platinum Guerilla Warfare [1999]. His next solo offering, Tha G-Code, went double-platinum followed by the platinum Project English. Meanwhile, 2003’s Juve The Great emerged as another unsung platinum classic as “Slow Motion” [feat. Soulja Slim] topped the Billboard Hot 100 at #1 for two weeks. He maintained a prolific pace in the ensuing years and collaborated with everyone from Future to Yo Gotti before reuniting with Cash Money Records. The chemistry thrives on their 2019 first full-length collaborative album, J.A.G.It boldly extended Juvenile’s own legacy with unanimous praise from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and Billboard as the singles “Just Another Gangsta” and “Dreams” [feat. NLE Choppa] tallied over 20 million total streams and views. Moreover, it preceded the stage for another collaborative effort and an O.G. Cash Money Records reunion on “Ride Dat” [feat. Lil Wayne].

Jernigan, who takes on the colossal role of Robert Plant, has a commanding stage presence that rivalsthe icon himself. Sandling, who brings John Paul Jones to life, masterfully plays bass, keyboards, and mandolin, replicating the multifaceted talent of the Zeppelin legend. In 2015, Bevan Davies joined Zoso on drums to master the part of John Bonham. Davies bringsan unmistakable power and precision to Zoso’s live shows, helping the band recreate Bonham’slegendary drum sound. A fan of Zoso, Rainero didn’t let an opportunity slip away when he learnedof an opening in the band’s lineup. His story read like something straight out of a movie script;Rainero reached out directly to the band through social media to request an audition. Whiledozens of musicians had already contacted the band with no success, Rainero’s determinationset him apart.Refusing to take no for an answer, he began uploading videos of himself playing classic songsfrom the band in his bedroom. It didn’t take long for the band to recognize his extraordinarytalent. His playing was not just skilled, it was a truly inspired performance, with the technicalmastery and soul that made it clear he was something special. The band immediately got him to Atlanta for an in-person audition. Rainero, ever ready, arrivedwith his bags packed, knowing he was prepared to seize the moment. His live auditionexceeded all expectations, and within days, he was on tour with the band, stepping into one ofrock history’s most iconic roles.

When Texas Playboys front man Jason Roberts steps onto a stage with his fiddle and utters his first “AH-ha” of the evening, western-swing fans know they’re seeing and hearing nothing less than the living embodiment of a tradition that stretches all the way back to 1933. That was the year the charismatic fiddler Bob Wills and several other musicians in a group called the Light Crust Doughboys broke away from Fort Worth’s Burris Mills and its autocratic business manager, W. Lee “Pappy” O’Daniel, to form their own band. As Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, they became one of the most popular touring and recording acts in the nation, offering audiences the highly danceable musical mixture that came to be known as western swing. Following Bob’s 1975 death, a group of ex-Playboys led by former Wills steel-guitarist Leon McAuliffe and hand-picked by McAuliffe and Bob’s widow, Betty, came together to keep the Bob Wills sound alive. Those men made a promise to one another that when the first of their number died, they would disband – and, true to their word, the group dissolved in 1986, following the death of piano player “Brother” Al Stricklin. Eventually, with the blessing of the Bob Wills estate, guitarist-producer Tommy Allsup, a longtime Wills collaborator, and Leon Rausch, the Playboys’ last great vocalist, took over Bob Wills’ Texas Playboys.  They continued squarely in the Wills style, delighting old fans and making new ones, until 2018, following the death of Allsup and the retirement of nonagenarian Rausch. Today, the Bob Wills sound continues, as big and bright and brassy as ever. The newest Texas Playboys aggregation is led by two-time Grammy winner Roberts, hand-picked by both the Wills estate and Leon Rausch, whose nearly two decades in the famed western-swing band Asleep at the Wheel includes an eight-year stint actually playing Bob Wills in the Wheel’s nationally touring musical-theatre production, A RIDE WITH BOB. And, like Bob’s original band, this group of Playboys includes some of the best swing musicians both Oklahoma and Texas have to offer. .  Together, Bob Wills’ Texas Playboys forge on through the 21st Century, bringing a nostalgic glow to longtime Wills fans and the joy of discovery to those who might not have even been born when Bob died.

FILTER: Diversity has been a hallmark of Richard Patrick’s career, and it’s administered with crushing efficiency on his latest eclectic set of new material from his band Filter. Fans weaned on the industrial outbursts and corrosive beats of such platinum-selling albums as Short Bus and Title of Record will be ecstatic to hear Patrick’s unmistakable scream and unflinching honesty dominating this new album. The prolific multi-instrumentalist swings back and forth between intensely personal narratives and politically charged diatribes in throwback industrial crushers. On the surface, tracks like “Thoughts & Prayers,” “Murica” and “Come Take My Guns” detail disgust in the goings on during Trump’s time in the White House, while a track like “Race to the Bottom” chronicles the alcoholics road to addiction. Frontman Patrick, the lone constant member of the veteran industrial rock act, reunited with original Filter programmer and producer Brian Liesegang to write several songs on the new record – Filter’s first in five years. While Patrick has always participated in the production of his music, this is the first time he has officially sat in the producer chair. In so doing, he has called upon several friends to help create his latest masterpiece, including newcomer Zach Munowitz and rapper TweezeDaShaggyGod. Filter was originally formed in Cleveland, OH in 1993 when Patrick desired to start his own band after leaving Nine Inch Nails as their touring guitarist. Their debut album Short Bus was released in 1995 and ended up going platinum, largely due to the success of the single “Hey Man Nice Shot.” The follow up, 1999’s Title of Record, also went platinum driven by the success of the song “Take a Picture.” Filter’s third album, The Amalgamut, was released in 2002, though sales stalled when Patrick checked into rehab after years of heavy alcohol and drug abuse just as touring and promotion began. Upon getting healthy, Patrick formed the supergroup Army of Anyone with Dean and Robert DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots and Ray Luzier of Korn, released one critically acclaimed album and toured the U.S. After AOA went on hiatus, Patrick returned to Filter, releasing Anthems for the Damned in 2008, The Trouble With Angels in 2010, The Sun Comes Out Tonight in 2013 and Crazy Eyes in 2016.
